Lady of the Dead

I woke up yesterday morning to find V in the downstairs bathroom putting on makeup. I asked what she was doing and she told me about a friend who was selling some artwork at the LA Convention Center for an event and she was to go down and help her by dressing up and hanging out around their booth.

She asked if I would drive her and I said of course. I wanted to get there to shoot the X-Games construction (which I never got around to). Here I am, a photographer, shuttling around a model. So what did I do naturally? Stopped all over to take photographs of her during our idle time.

I drove her to meet her friend, and while we were waiting I asked her to take a seat in this abandoned lazy boy. I thought it was perfect with the bulldog barking next to her, so California.

I picked her up later that night and we were both invited over to my Aunt Sally’s house for dinner. However, we had arrived and nobody was home. As we sat around I figured we might as well get a few more shots in.

A better look at her paint.

I love palm trees, they’ve been around me my whole life. After a year in Rochester I truly missed them. Something about their stature and leaves, how they look like upside down paint brushes with flaring bristles swaying in the wind.

It turned out that we weren’t on time for dinner, but we were an entire day early. It was Friday, not Saturday. Then time for home. V was going to take a bath to remove her makeup, I asked if I could photograph her before she does. I lit some candles I had found in a box and laid them around the tub. I wanted lighting that would enhance the motif, I went with candles.

And my favorite shot.
