Washington, DC – Day One

Today was the first day of a week long field trip to our nation’s capitol, Washington, DC. On this trip my classmates and I run around to different agencies like NPR, USA Today, Reuters, and more. Today we met with McClatchy-Tribune News Service or just MCD. This meeting was similar in style and message to that of the NY meetings I had at the beginning of the year, but there were also some interesting things I jotted down and will be sharing. Our meeting was with Linda Epstein, really cool lady and I really appreciated her honesty about the industry and its expectations on us as photographers.

Some quick notes I made:

– I’m going to keep the MCT website handy. When events happen I’ll pop in and just see how their freelancers are shooting these events. Give me insight on what the other photographers are doing and how they’re creating their images.

– Get a nice portfolio online, call places and just ask for work.

– Start practicing more on captions, in fact, practice writing more in my everyday life.

– “Caption is not to be cute” -Linda

– “I would rather have a caption with too much information.” -Linda

– Fill out all your IPTC information ALWAYS

– I need to get registered with NPPA

Of course I took photographs today. It’s been a while since I’ve had my camera because it broke a couple weeks back. Also, I’ve been busy with school, moving to my new apartment, and practicing for my concert with Kansas. I must say it was nice to just take my camera out and take pretty photos. All in all it was a pretty fun day, good food, catching up with friends, cute squirrels, and incredible monuments.
